I’m sensing a big anticipation for the coming new year. It seems a lot of my friends and colleagues are posting on social media about how they can’t wait for a new year to begin. Do you feel it too? It seems like 2016 wasn’t the best year for many.
How do you feel about it?
Me? Well, I do have anticipation for the coming year. I’m excited legitimately for some planned events and the potential of new things happening that I have no idea about. I am an optimist so I tend to error on the side of the glass is half full.
This last week in December is an interesting one as it seems I just count down the days till New Year’s Day. In all reality, there’s nothing magical about January 1st, but I do appreciate how this time of year naturally draws us to a place of reflection and planning. It’s easy to get caught up in major life renovation plans (AKA resolutions), but as we can all probably agree, they don’t tend to work.
So what does work? Well, last year I wrote a whole post on How to Make New Year’s Resolutions that Work and this is a great place to start. Then, break down big changes into small, new rituals, only focusing on 1-2 things at a time. Use your phone or other reminders to help you make this new ritual a daily practice. (I use the word “practice” very intentionally because healthy living is a practice that you work on your whole life.) It’s only through practice that desired habits become a natural, daily ritual.
One of the rituals I often encourage people to focus on (and focus on myself) is upping my intake of fruits and vegetables through realistics ideas. Even when everything else in my eating or routine may seem haywire, focusing on fruits and vegetables recenters me and reconnects me to my ultimate mission.
Smoothies offer an extremely easy way to get a lot of fruits and veggies in one shot. I am a huge smoothie person and drink one almost every day. I really rely on getting 4-5 different kinds of produce in my morning smoothie to start me on the right foot.
While I do have many different smoothie concoctions I make on a regular basis, I do have a few favorites including this Orange Mango Ginger Smoothie. I’ve found that mango smoothies are always a crowd favorite with Team Braddock.
Here’s how you make it:
- 1 cup frozen mango chunks
- 1 orange, peeled
- 1" piece of fresh ginger root
- 4 mini cocktail cucumbers or 6" of a large cucumber
- 4 stalks of celery, cut in pieces
- 1 cup of water or milk of choice (more or less can be used to reach desired consistency)
- 2 Tablespoons ground flax seed
- 1 tablespoon ground turmeric
- Before chopping any produce, wash thoroughly.
- Place ingredients in a high powered blender in order of the recipe. Blend on high until very smooth, about 45-60 seconds. Add more liquid if needed to reach desired consistency.
- Serve immediately.
