As a football coaching family, it is really important to me to paint a positive picture of our life to our kids. It can be hard for littles to understand why their daddy is gone a lot and I needed some help communicating the right message. Perhaps the best way to teach kids about anything is through the use of good books. So, I searched for the best football books for kids to help them learn the game of football, cultivate excitement for Friday night lights, and better understand what we were all about.

If you are looking for fun football bedtime books to read with your little football fan, fun ways to teach sportsmanship, or perhaps know a football family who might also enjoy such stories, check out my list below. Some of these teach straight up football and others have a sweet and valuable lesson embedded.

Here our my favorite football books for kids so far with a little synopsis.

The Dog that Stole Football Plays

The Dog that Stole Football Plays book for young readers

The Dog that Stole Football Plays is the story about a dog and a boy who can read each other's minds. The dog helps his owner know the plays of the other team so they can easily win. However, the boy realizes he is not playing fair and learns the right way to play. This book teaches fairness, competition and self-determination to young boys and girls. This is a great book for young readers to read aloud to a parent as well.

Kick, Pass and Run

Kick, Pass, Run is an old-school but excellent book that is fun to read and has good reviews on Amazon. It's the first time for this group of animals to learn about football. They decide to try to figure out what it's all about. They do this by mimicking it alongside a real football player in a game. It teaches about the beautiful game of football and how to play well with others.

Goodnight Football

Goodnight Football board book

Next up, Goodnight Football! For fans of board books, thisĀ bedtimeĀ boardĀ bookĀ is especially perfect. It describes all the hoopla and fun around going to bigĀ modernĀ football games. If your family loves football games, thenĀ this is the best book. It is sure to help your little ones get excited for the next big game.

My Football Book

My Football Book by Gail Gibbons for young readers learning the game of football

My Football Book does a great job of introducing kids to the X's and O's of football. It labels everything on the field and teaches players and rules. My boys especially love that the coach on the field is easy to find. =)

Football with Dad

A Little Golden Book called Football with Dad by Frank Berrios

Football with Dad is a book that describes what seems to be a Sunday afternoon of watching the most popular sport of football with dad. It's a really sweet depiction of a father-son interaction. It may not be everyone's reality, so there's that, but overall, it will give your child an idea of how they can have fun watching football with Dad.

Though there are definitely plenty of other books that provide great insight into things like the history of football tactics or the greatest players, this essential guide of children's books is meant to nurture and gently communicate the importance of the game to children of football coaches.  If fun football bedtime books are in your game plans, I hope this list helped!
