Easy Instant Pot Black Beans Recipe (Without Soaking)

This is the best way to make black beans using dry beans (no soaking!) in the Instant Pot or pressure cooker. They're flavorful, but not too strong, so you can use them in a variety of different dishes or all by themselves.

This recipe is an affordable way to make delicious black beans for a crowd or meal prep for the week. Your Instant Pot can turn dry beans into a delicious protein main dish or perfect side dish in less than an hour of cooking time. And if it's your first time ever making pressure cooker beans, this recipe is for you.

Ingredients

  • Olive oil
  • Green Bell Pepper
  • Yellow onion
  • Garlic cloves
  • Broth or stock of choice
  • Dry black beans
  • Bay leaf
  • Tomato paste
  • Kosher salt
  • Garlic powder

Instructions

Here's how you make these delicious and healthy beans:

Dice a medium yellow onion and green bell pepper.

Onion and bell pepper in the instant pot with minced garlic and olive oil.

Turn your Instant Pot or smart pressure cooker to "sauté" mode and let heat. Once heated, add the oil, then the diced onion and bell pepper. Cook, stirring frequently until softened, about 4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook stirring frequently for 1-2 minutes, until fragrant and softened, but not browned.

Broth, water, beans, bay leaf, salt, and garlic powder added to the instant pot.

Turn off the sauté function on your Instant Pot. Pour in the broth/stock, water, beans, bay leaf, salt and garlic powder.Stir to combine.

Lock the lid of the Instant Pot in place and make sure the venting knob is not open. Press "Manual" on the Instant Pot and set the timer for 45 minutes.

When the timer goes off on the Instant Pot you can choose to use the natural release option if you have time or manually release the pressure. Once pressure is released, open the top of the Instant Pot carefully. Add tomato paste and stir to combine. Remove bay leaf. Easy peasy!

Variations

  • To make this recipe vegetarian, use vegetable broth.
  • For higher protein you can use bone broth.
  • You can also use beef or chicken broth or chicken stock.
  • You could top with your favorite toppings such as lime juice, tortilla chips, or red onion to name a few.
  • This recipe would be great in a burrito bowl with white rice or brown rice.
  • This recipe can be made in the slow cooker on low with a cook time of 7 hours.

Equipment

An Instant Pot is the only piece of equipment you'll need for this delicious beans recipe.

Storage

These flavorful beans are made with simple ingredients. To store, let the beans cool to a warm, but not cold temperature first. Then pour into an airtight container. It will keep in the fridge for about 5 days.

Description

This is the best way to make no soak black beans in the Instant Pot or pressure cooker. They're flavorful, but not too strong, so you can use them in a variety of different dishes or all by themselves. 


Ingredients

Scale

1 tbsp olive oil

1 medium yellow onion, diced

1 green bell pepper, diced

4-5 garlic cloves, minced

2 cups broth or stock of choice

1 cup water

1 ½ cups dry black beans

1 bay leaf

½ tsp Kosher salt

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tbsp tomato paste


Instructions

  1. Turn your Instant Pot or smart pressure cooker to "sauté" mode and let heat.
  2. Once heated, add the oil, then the diced onion and bell pepper. Cook, stirring frequently until softened, about 4 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook stirring frequently for 1-2 minutes, until fragrant and softened, but not browned. 
  4. Turn off the sauté function on your Instant Pot. Pour in the broth/stock, water, beans, bay leaf, salt and garlic powder. 
  5. Lock the lid of the Instant Pot in place and make sure the release knob is not open. Press "Manual" on the Instant Pot and set the timer for 45 minutes.
  6. When Instant Pot is done cooking (it will beep), manually release the pressure by moving the pressure release knob to "Release".
  7. Once pressure is released, open the top of the Instant Pot carefully. Add tomato paste and stir to combine. Remove bay leaf and enjoy!

Notes

This recipe could be made in the slow cooker by cooking on low for 7 hours.
