I’ve lived in St. Augustine since 2006, so I would call myself a local by now. I’ve watched this beautiful city really come alive food-wise over my time here. The coffee scene is now a vibrant, exciting one with all sorts of options, flavors and vibes to choose from. Here’s the list of my favorite St. Augustine coffee shops to hit up while in the Ancient City, along with some that I’d say are a pass.

Ever wondered if coffee is actually good for you? I wrote all about that topic in a post found here: Is Coffee Healthy?

Perfect Spot to Work

Kookaburra Coffee

Kookaburra Coffee shop best coffee in St. Augustine

This is one of my favorite coffee shops to stay and work in for a while. You have to try my favorite coffee drink anywhere- their Honey Badger Latte, served cold or hot. They are a locally owned, roasted, and operated coffee shop that has a cult following. Known as the “Aussie American espresso and pie shop”, their Aussie pies are a MUST TRY. I still remember the first time I had an Aussie pie. I skeptically thought, "What in the world are “meat pies”? Weird!" I’m so glad I tried it, as it is the most delicious mix of a quiche and flaky pie. I prefer the breakfast pies that are stuffed with a mix of eggs, cheese and breakfast meats. The Corker is our personal favorite.

Their name comes from the Kookaburra bird native to Australia and the country’s national symbol. There are 6 locations around St. Johns County. They have expertly crafted, unique specialty coffee drinks. In the fall, you have to try their pumpkin spice latte. It is the BEST as they use real pumpkin to flavor it. Most locations have parking. The St. Augustine beach location has an outdoor window, perfect for a quick order before heading to the beach.

Great Coffee With a Mission

Growers Alliance

This is my favorite tasting drip coffee in town. It’s low acid and so smooth. I stock up on the whole bean varieties and use it in my french press at home. They are also hyper committed to fair trade practices.  You’ll find them at the St. Augustine Farmers Market every Saturday too and their iced coffee with cream and sugar is just magic. It’s so good. This coffee shop is very cool because it’s more than just about the coffee, they have a mission.

On their website they share: "Through our 501C3 non profit organization - Kijiji International, Growers Alliance Coffee is focused on improving the lifestyles of the coffee growers, and educating them on utilizing any available resources to be economically independent." The owners are from Kenya and some of the most wonderful people in town. They are always willing to strike up a conversation with a customer. I always leave with a smile on my face. I highly recommend visiting this shop when you are not in a hurry. It’s one of a kind with plenty of parking and a convenient drive through window.

Update: They are looking to open a new location soon, but until then you can continue to find them at the Farmers Market. The best way to stay up to date with this shop is through their Facebook page.

Unique Menu Items

Sunday Gathering Table

This is my favorite place to get french press coffee alongside an incredible brunch. Inside the restaurant you'll find a bright and cozy atmosphere with local art lining the walls. The food is incredible and you should try anything on their sourdough bread. Again, that French press coffee is where it is. There is only street parking for this restaurant but it is well worth it!

DOS Coffee & Wine Bar

DOS is different from the above mentioned because it serves a bigger menu of food, is a wine bar, and is a hip place to hang out. With their lovely outdoor seating area and occasional live music, this is where I would go to meet friends for catching up or hanging out on a Saturday evening. As for their coffee, they roast their own and have a killer pour over that is worth the wait for. I like that it is located on the north part of town, closer to me, and away from the tourist chaos of downtown.

Sweet Treats

Choco-Lattes

This is one of my favorite dessert places in downtown St. Augustine. We’ve celebrated a few birthdays here because man, their cakes are delicious. They serve their house blends of coffees which are also amazing and pair really nice with their over the top desserts. Located in a historic house downtown, this is the perfect spot to take a break from walking around and do a little people watching.

Screaming Peacock Coffee

Named after the very loud peacocks at the Fountain of Youth, this coffee can only be found in local shops around town or ordered online. The name alone should make you want to try it. It's a great souvenir to bring back to coffee-loving friends at home because, well, the name! But it really does taste great too. I usually have it when getting donuts at Island Donuts, where it is the hot coffee served. My favorite blend is the Midnight Mayhem.

Gluten-Free Options

Alms and Fare

This coffee shop and bakery has a wellness theme. All their baked goods are gluten free, dairy free and naturally sweetened. Besides good coffee, you’ll also find local teas, wellness drinks and smoothies on their menu. Head to this beautiful shop to relax and eat something nourishing.

Cuban Restaurants

You can find some really good places to get your Cuban coffee fix at:

1928 Cuban Bistro

This one is located in North St. Johns County, so technically not St. Augustine. But it's a delightful Cuban cafe and the perfect place for a yummy breakfast or lunch. The Cuban coffee is fantastic and the family that owns it is lovely and always friendly.

Paladar Cuban Eatery

Located on the south part of Anastasia Island, this spot is worth a try and you should definitely eat the food too!

Cravings and More Bakery

This place may not look like much on the outside but it is beautiful on the inside. It's a wonderful place to get breakfast, read the paper and enjoy some really tasty menu items. They have Cuban coffee but SO much more. Their house-made pastries are breathtaking and the menu is impressive. This is a great local place to escape tourists.
